European Computer
Driving Licence
ECDL is a Europe-wide qualification. It enables people to
demonstrate their competence in computer skills covering all
aspects of the computer. This qualification opens up
opportunities and confirms to potential employers that the
person has practical and up to date computer skills.
The course consists of 7 modules:
Module 1: Basic Concepts of IT
This module covers the theory of computer across the
following areas: basic concepts of IT; applications and
computers; IT and the society; security, copyright and law;
hardware, software, ergonomics; information networks.
Module 2: Using the Computer
This involves an understanding of the basic housekeeping
functions required for the efficient use of the computer.
- Switch on and shut down properly
- Understand the folder structure
- Create folders and sub-folders
- Create and save files in specified folders
- Identify file location, size, date
- Rename, copy, move and delete files
- Format and save to floppy disk, use printer.
Module 3: Word
Processing
- Access and load word processing software
- Create a new document or edit existing one
- Create/import a table, import graphics, import text
- Use common functions such as copy, paste, headers,
footers, italics, bold, fonts, line-spacing, justification
- Use a spell check and help functions
- Indentation, use and set tabs, hyphenation
- Use mail merge
- Use templates
- Use integrated software
- Format documents to an appropriate style.
Module 4: Spreadsheets
- Create new spreadsheet or edit existing one
- Enter numbers, text, formulae, insert rows and columns,
sort data, use functions eg totals, averages
- Add headers and footers
- Use relative and absolute cell references
- Produce and print charts and graphs
- Move information between spreadsheets
- Use integrated software.
Module 5: Databases
- Design a database, create a record structure
- Enter and edit data. Add and delete records
- Edit existing database
- Search for, select and sort data
- Present data in various sequences
- Modify database structure.
Module 6:
Presentation and Drawing
Module 7: Information Networks
- Send and receive e-mails
- Connect to the Internet to retrieve specific
information.

Advanced ECDL
Word Processing and Spreadsheets only
There are currently only two modules available in Advanced
ECDL - Word Processing and Spreadsheets. Each module is a
certified qualification on its own.
The syllabus for Advanced ECDL is over and
above the skills and underpinning knowledge contained within
ECDL core level. The advanced level anticipates that the
candidate has already mastered the necessary skills required
for ECDL core.
Module AM3 Word Processing (Advanced
Module 3)
This level requires the candidate to use the word procesing
application to produce what are deemed to be advanced word
processing documents and will be able to
- Illustrate sophisticated typographical, formattting and
layout presentation
- Create/edit advanced tables, forms and graphics
- Use tools such as macros
- Carry out advanced mail merge operations.
Module AM4 Spreadsheets (Advanced Module
4)
The candidate shall be able
to produce advanced level spreadsheets and will be able to
- Edit and enhance numeric, text and graphical data
- Sort, query and link data
- Carry out advanced formatting
- Use presentation operations on charts and graphs
- Use functions such as those associated with logical,
statistical or mathematical operations
- Use available analysis and audit tools and run and
record simple macros.

Level 1 Certificate in I.T. (New CLAIT)
To achieve the full New CLAIT candidates must achieve
the one mandatory unit and four optional units. There are
ten optional units to choose from, covering areas from the web
to desktop publishing, meaning there is something to suit
everybody.

Processing
Stages 1, 2 and 3
There are 3 stages to this qualification and 2 parts to
each stage.
Stage 1
Part one aims to assess the candidates’ ability to produce
various simple documents which includes a letter, memo and a
short report or article. The overall aim is to meet the
business document production requirements of an employer.
This Award tests knowledge and skill at a level suitable
for further development and training. Part two involves
recalling text and making amendments. The type of documents
to be produced are a notice for display, an article and a
three column table.
Stage 2
This level is intended for those with sufficient skills,
knowledge and command of English to carry out the production
of business documents without supervision. Part two involves
producing documents from recalled text, handwritten and
typewritten drafts and making a number of amendments to text.
Candidates are required to produce a notice for display, an
article, lists of alphabetical/numerical/chronological
information, a table and a standard document which includes
phrases from a phrase file.
Stage 3
Part 1 involves applying advanced processing and production
skills to produce business documents. The documents to be
produced include a letter, memo and a report or article. This
level tests the candidates’ ability to identify grammatical
and spelling errors.
Part 2 tests candidates’ ability to produce a variety of
complex and specialist business documents. Candidates will be
required to produce a multi-page report, a landscape document
with ruling, a two column article and a letter or memo.
M.O.U.S Microsoft
Office User Specialist
The Microsoft Office User Specialist (MOUS) program is the
only comprehensive certification program designed to validate
desktop computer skills using Microsoft Office applications,
MOUS proves literacy, measures proficiency, improves
productivity and identifies opportunities for skills
enhancement.
The exams are not a written test,
instead, they feature real-world assignments that are based on
the way you actually use your computer. Using an actual
document, for example, you’ll be asked to perform a series of
tasks that clearly demonstrate your desktop computing skills.
The Microsoft Office Specialist program
offers two levels of certification: Core and Expert.
Individuals can also pass additional exams to achieve
Microsoft Office Specialist Master Certification.
The level you choose depends on your skills and experience.

Technologies
Internet Technologies is a qualification
designed to assess the candidate’s ability to use the Internet
for communication, information gathering and publishing
within a vocational context. Candidates are assessed by means
of three examinations. Each examination covers one element of
certification and can be taken at any time. To achieve the
complete Internet Technologies qualification, candidates must
achieve all three elements.

Web Page Design
This is not a certified qualification as
yet, though can be used towards the OCR Internet Technologies
qualification.
This course is designed to enable you to
create an interactive web site using FrontPage 2000. This is
a highly visual, intuitive software package allowing use of
WSIWYG (what you see is what you get) facilities. You will
also be able to use the in-built text editor to view and edit
HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) coding.
The course will detail fully how to:

SAGE Accounting and Payroll
This course involves using SAGE Line 50
Accounting software. Candidates will demonstrate competence in
using a computerised accounting system to process nominal
ledger transactions: process routine payments and receipts,
process salary journals, prepare A VAT report, reconcile the
main bank account, correct transactions errors and print
appropriate reports.
